Below the house, at the base of the hill, we wanted a structure that brought to mind a rustic Asian ruin, a forgotten temple gateway re-ornamented in more recent times with iconic carvings.

In clearing a space for the stairs, what seemed like a small stone was revealed to be a large slab that would make one side of the gate monolithic--an opportunity not to be missed.
