A privacy problem

A design solution

Codified, stylized and assigned a contemporary geometry, a lake, a river and a waterfall comprise two fountains that work as one in this entry courtyard.  The house was stylishly remodeled, but the old asphalt driveway that swooped right up to the front door left no hope of privacy or a dignified approach to the home.  Raw concrete walls, stained the color of fallen leaves, enclose the space, make a backdrop for the plantings and pick up the rusty browns occurring naturally in the bluestone paving.  The lake, an eclipsed-circle fountain basin, spills into the river, a zigzag rill preconfigured to follow the joints of the paving stones in a random meander.  The river drops below the surface and pops up again further on, adding a touch of mystery and acknowledging traffic patterns to and from the front door.  On the wall, water sheets down over opalescent glass tiles, animating the distant corner, flowing with the river into obscurity.
