Edgemoor Residence

A proper balance of elegance and modesty was the guiding principle for the landscape design upon which this new home in Bellingham’s Edgemoor neighborhood sits.

Home designed by
Deborah Todd
.

Being involved before the house was constructed allowed planning for deep planting beds in which a soft, but formal gateway of Korean fir was planted.

Across the drive from the entryway is a stage upon which seasonal changes perform. Though elements are ever-green, spring blossoms in the branches of Amelanchier, the elegance of the magnolia’s summer blooms, the presence of the grasses in the fall, and the soft winter fragrance of Sarcococca welcome the residents home year-round.

In the back garden, a steep slope of ivy was removed and replaced with a deck stepping down to a secluded terrace for quiet reflection.

Our goal to merge sustainability into the design inspired us to incorporate a rainwater dispersal basin as a formal design element (detailed here) and the hemlock for the formal hedge.
