A reminder of Asia fused with elements characteristic of our Pacific Northwest, this is a garden designed for lovers of both plants and artistic form.
Below the house, at the base of the hill, we wanted a structure that brought to mind a rustic Asian ruin, a forgotten temple gateway re-ornamented in more recent times with iconic carvings.
Though it is not a primary entrance to the property, it is a place to be discovered. It provides an intriguing alternative access to the house from an auxiliary parking space, and the winding, climbing stair allows close viewing of the unique collection of plants.
This stone mosaic “carpet” spreads from the point of arrival to the front entry guiding visitors from the driveway to the front door.
The grid-like paving shown here is a permeable surface allowing water to percolate deep into the soil instead of running down the drive toward the bay.
